A backend your product can grow around.

Permissions, subscriptions and background work become harder as a product grows. We make the rules and boundaries easier to understand.

No pressure, no hard sell.

We design the rules behind your product, from tenant boundaries to background work. Bring the part that is becoming difficult to change; we will identify the architectural decisions that need attention first.

What we deliver

A documented system boundary

We map the product's main responsibilities and the interfaces between them. We separate decisions about code organization from decisions about deployment, so a modular design does not automatically mean many services. The architecture note records why each boundary exists and what would justify changing it later.

A tenant and access model

We define how organizations, users and roles relate to records. Tenant context must reach queries, jobs, exports and administrative actions, not just the login screen. We write down the isolation approach and test access paths that could expose another organization's data. You review the administrative exceptions explicitly.

A database that reflects the rules

We model relationships, uniqueness and state transitions around product behavior. We consider indexes using expected queries and investigate expensive operations with representative data where available. Schema changes include a migration plan, with attention to existing records and the order in which application versions may be deployed.

Reliable background workflows

Tasks such as report generation, imports and notifications need defined retry behavior and a way to see failure. We separate request handling from work that can run later when appropriate. Job handlers account for repeated execution, and operating notes explain how to inspect, retry or resolve a failed task.

Billing and entitlement boundaries

We distinguish what a customer purchased from what the application currently permits. Payment events, subscription changes and access decisions need an explicit relationship. We define the relevant states and recovery paths with you, including delayed provider events, so a temporary integration problem does not become an invisible access decision.

Operational visibility and handover

We identify the signals that explain the health of key workflows. Logs and alerts should help locate a failed operation without exposing unnecessary sensitive information. Documentation covers configuration, deployment and routine investigation. Your team gets a walkthrough of the system map and the places where operational decisions are made.

We will agree the deliverables before implementation.

How it works

  1. Find the constraint

We review the product journey, current code and operating evidence available to you. The issue might be an unclear rule, a slow query, unsafe access or a difficult release process. We distinguish observations from assumptions and agree the constraint to address before choosing an architectural pattern.

  2. Compare practical options

We compare approaches against your data, team and operating needs. Shared or separate tenant storage, synchronous or background work, and modular or separately deployed components each carry costs. We document the selected option and the reason the alternatives are less suitable for the current scope.

  3. Prove the risky boundary

We implement a focused slice around the decision with the greatest uncertainty. That may be tenant isolation, a subscription event or a migration path. The review uses explicit failure examples and realistic records where possible. Evidence from this slice guides the remaining implementation, rather than an abstract diagram alone.

  4. Make operation understandable

We review test coverage, migration order and the signals needed after release. A handover covers common investigations and the limits of the design. We record future decisions that can wait until a concrete need appears. You receive an architecture note that another engineer can use to continue the work.

The framework and storage follow your product and existing expertise. Caching, queues and separate services need a demonstrated purpose. We explain the proposed architecture, operating responsibilities and the conditions that would justify revisiting it. These tools are options, not a prescribed bundle.

We will explain the stack before the build.

Typical outcomes

More explicit product rules

Permissions, tenancy and entitlements become documented decisions with tests around important boundaries. That makes review easier when a feature changes who can see or edit data. We show the rules in a working slice so your team can check the intended behavior.

Easier diagnosis

A failed job or delayed event should leave enough context to investigate. We define useful states and operational signals around the scoped workflows. These can make support conversations more concrete, while the final result depends on the instrumentation and access available in your environment.

Changes with fewer surprises

Clear data relationships and migration notes help explain the impact of a release. They provide a basis for reviewing changes before deployment. We identify unresolved constraints alongside the implementation, so future work starts with a realistic picture of the system.

We will agree concrete acceptance examples for these intended improvements.

Engagement options

A fixed-scope engagement can address one architectural boundary or deliver a defined backend. Dedicated monthly engineering fits a product whose backend needs evolve with new features. Hourly consulting suits a tenancy or storage decision before implementation. Bring the system diagram you have, even if it is incomplete, and we will suggest a useful starting scope.

Fixed-scope project

Defined deliverables, agreed acceptance criteria and scope changes discussed before implementation.

Dedicated monthly engineering

An evolving backlog, priorities agreed together and working increments you can review.

Hourly technical consulting

A focused question, agreed review boundaries and findings to inform your next decision.

Bring your constraints; we will recommend a starting model.

Questions before we start

Do we need microservices?

Not automatically. Separate services add deployment, coordination and investigation work. A modular application may provide the boundaries you need with less operational overhead. We compare the options against your team, release needs and actual constraints. The recommendation explains what problem separate deployment would solve before introducing it.

Which tenancy model should we use?

The answer depends on isolation requirements, operating costs, reporting and how tenant data changes over time. Shared tables, separate schemas and separate databases have different trade-offs. We document those against your product needs and review access across requests, jobs and administrative tools. Bring any contractual isolation requirements to the first discussion.

Can you improve a backend that already exists?

Yes. We can start with a focused review of the area causing trouble and change it incrementally. Existing behavior and data need to be understood before restructuring code. We will propose a sequence that explains dependencies, validation and release considerations, rather than assuming a full replacement is necessary.

Will the design support unlimited growth?

No architecture removes every future constraint. We design for the requirements and evidence available, document important limits and identify when a decision should be revisited. Performance claims require representative testing. You receive a reasoned design and a way to investigate pressure points, rather than an unsupported promise about scale.

What should we share for a review?

A product walkthrough, the current system map, a schema overview and examples of the problem are useful. Access can be limited to what the review requires. Logs or query plans may help when performance is involved. We will agree the evidence needed and the handling of sensitive records before starting.

Include other constraints in your enquiry so we can review them during scoping.
